West Erie County DWCO Randy G. Leighton, rglerie@msn.com Conditions: This past weekend saw a fair number of anglers along the wall at the Walnut Creek Access. Wind and wave conditions varied this past weekend making things touch and go for the boaters. A few steelhead have been caught at daybreak and the early morning hours but the operative word is few. A few pods of fish has been observed off and on in the Walnut channel and there are actually a few fish that have made it to the Manchester Hole. Be advised, his is not the starting gun of the season, but it is an indication that conditions are starting to change and a few fish are starting the day break exploratory runs. The tribs are exceptionally low and clear. Current Lake Erie Water Temperature off Toledo is 67 degrees, off Cleveland, 71 degrees, and off Erie, 69 degrees. Current West County tributary conditions remain very low and clear with little to no flow. A good number of steelhead have been brought in from the deeper waters Executive Director John Arway and Commissioner Edward Mascharka to Attend This Months PA Steelhead Association Meeting Wednesday, September 8th: Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) Executive Director John Arway will be the featured speaker at a special evening program being hosted by the PA Steelhead Association to discuss Marcellus Shale and other issues affecting the angling and boating community. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on September 8 at the American Legion Club at 4109 West 12th Street in Erie. Mr. Arway will offer the Fish and Boat Commission’s perspective on the current and potential impacts of Marcellus development to aquatic resources, fishing and boating. He will explain the Commission’s role as it relates to enforcing pollution laws and advising on Marcellus activities and make the case for enactment of the proposed severance tax. He will also describe the authority to enforce water pollution laws vested in the Commission as far back as 1909 and the important roles that Commission staff continues to play in making sure that Marcellus and other projects are designed and implemented with as little impact to the resource as possible. In a sneak preview of his talk, Mr. Arway noted, “If we received a portion of a severance tax, we could take a collaborative approach with both the industry and the other agencies that are reviewing and advising on projects. Ultimately, we would like to have Commission staff in position to spend the necessary time reviewing and commenting on projects, working in the field with developers and other agencies and enforcing the water pollution laws of the Commonwealth to make sure our resources are protected. I truly believe that the public expect that service from us, and the resources under our jurisdiction depend upon it to survive.” The program will also provide anglers and boaters an opportunity to meet Commissioner Mascharka, who joined the PFBC Board of Commissioners in June. Other groups expected to be at the meeting include the SONS of Lake Erie, Lawrence Park Fishing Club and Erie Sport Fishing Association. The program is open to the public and plenty of free parking is available. Tall Ships Tour to Sail Into Erie This Weekend: Tall Ships Erie is scheduled for September 9th to September 12th, 2010 on Dobbins Landing. The event will include eight tall ships open for tours and other small vessels for sailing excursions. Tall Ships Erie is a fundraiser to support the Flagship Niagara. It will be held during Erie Heritage Weekend. We are expecting 30,000 to 50,000 people in attendance, based on similar events held around the Great Lakes. For more information, schedules, a list of the ships, and tickets go to Tall Ships Erie Important Information Concerning Overnight Anglers and Boaters Using the Walnut Creek Access Area: The Fall steelhead season is fast approaching in Erie County and anglers and boaters should be aware that camping on Fish and Boat Commission property is unlawful. Access areas include, Walnut Creek Access Area, Elk Creek Access Area, Sterrettania Access Area, Fairview Gravel Pits, North East Access Area and Eaton Reservoir.
It is unlawful for a person to camp overnight on or in Commission-owned or controlled property or waters, to erect a tent or other device used for, or capable of being used for cooking or sleeping, or to build or maintain open fires on such property.
