West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Frigid temperatures have been the norm in our area with only a few breaks in the weather. The cold temperatures have kept hard water fishing conditions good. Presques Isle Bay has been covered with huts on the weekends with anglers doing fair to good. The steelhead fans have been drilling ice at the Walnut Creek Marina and channel, the lake shore at Trout and Godfrey Runs and at the Elk Creek Access area. Catch rates for steelhead through the ice in these areas has been good. In the midst of all the heavy ice, there is a surprising amount of open water in some areas. Anglers were fishing open water south of the Access area on Elk Creek as well as a number of areas on the East side mile tribs.

This is also the season for the ice boaters on the Bay. These high speed wind sleds are typically found on the West end of Presque Isle Bay. Anglers are advised to watch out for them as they move fast and have limited maneuverability
