West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions: September and early October often present a smorgasbord of opportunities for area anglers and this year is no exception. Earlier this week temperatures soared into the upper eighties slowing the steelhead migration but at the same time allowing boaters to continue to take to the Lake for perch and walleye. In Erie there always seems to be an alternative catch. The Walnut Creek Access was bulging at the seams over the weekend with an overlap of steelhead anglers and boaters getting in some late season perch and walleye fishing

Steelhead continue to stage at the tributary mouths with only a few steelhead observed in the Trout Run Nursery waters. Boaters have had some luck trolling the shoreline as have the shore anglers. The "chorus line" continues to build along the shore at Trout Run with catches at daybreak are common. A number of anglers were casting spoons along the shoreline at Walnut Creek this past Sunday just east of the channel with surprising success. Water levels remain very low in the tribs however, some rainfall is predicted for this week. Current Lake temperature is still a warm 68 degrees. Late night and early daybreak anglers are having luck on the wall at Walnut Creek and to some degree up to the access at Elk Creek. Spoons, tipped minifoo jigs, paste baits, single eggs and crawlers have all been productive baits. As is typical, September continues to be a banner month for perch. 55-62' due north of Walnut Creek and north of the point at Presque Isle at the '886 and '490 location are the productive areas.
Boaters are limiting out in as little as a few hours catching doubles and triples of 12-inch-plus perch. If Emerald Shiners are not available, Fathead Minnows will work in a pinch.
Anglers have been having some luck along the South Pier as well with both Perch and Crappie.

Law Enforcement: Late night weekend patrols are finding many boaters and anglers using the Walnut Creek Access Area parking lot as a for overnight sleeping which is construed as camping. PFBC controlled property does not permit overnight camping. As of late, anglers and boaters using the lot for overnight sleeping have been issued warnings and citations will be issued if necessary to alleviate this problem should it persist. With the daytime crowds that this area is now experiencing, one could only imagine the kayos that would develop if this practice were allowed to continue. The Erie area offers many reasonably priced campgrounds and angler friendly motels for those staying overnight.

Last Reminder for PSA Big Run Banquet: The club will be holding their annual Big Run Banquet this Saturday, September 29th. Tickets can be requested electronically by emailing psa@pasteelhead.org or you can get them at Poor Richards East or West stores, Folly's End Camp Grounds and Fish USA (ask for Brian). This is a huge event is a must attend event for the avid steelhead angler with great food, prizes, raffles, demonstrations and more. It's a great way to start the steelhead season and share common enthusiasm for the great fishery that the Erie area offers. Don't miss it!

Night Time Tips for Steelhead Fishing:
1) A good lantern with a shield on the streamside will provide all the light
needed and minimize spooking the fish.

2) Scented baits are the ticket at night with low visibility. Try
nightcrawlers, minnows, grubs, waxworms, skein, and of course plenty of paste baits in assorted colors

3) Baits should be fished on the bottom.

4) Lighted floats to detect strikes can be helpful.

5) Heavier lines of up to 8 # test can be used at night.

6) Glow in the dark Cleos can be deadly when casting from shore into the lake.

7) Dress warm, pack a snack and hot drink and your favorite folding chair and
be sure to clean up your area when you leave.

8) DON'T FORGET TO BRING THE KIDS!
