West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

The Erie area has received significant rainfall over the past few days raising trib levels significantly for now. It is important to recognize that we have been experiencing very dry conditions over the last month and much more rain will be important in triggering any significant steelhead migration. We are starting to see a drop in night time temperatures that combined with additional precipitation should produce fish in the tribs. A few steelhead have been caught along the wall at Walnut Creek but still no big action yet but it shouldn't be long and with the most recent weather forecasts, the lower stretches of the tribs could see fish by the weekend. This is not a prediction...just a possibility. Perch fishing is still good when the lake is calm. Heavy wind and waves that accompany strong western fronts are common this time of year and boaters are advised to keep and eye on the sky and monitor the weather radio and marine forecasts Current Lake Erie temperature off the Port of Erie is 73 degrees.

Streuchen Flats:
The Streuchan Flats area along Elk Creek off of West Road has been designated as a public park by Fairview Township with signage in place. This area is open from sunrise to sunset only. Open fires and camping are not permitted in the park. Area PFBC law enforcement will be patrolling this area.

Whiteman's Bridge on Elk Creek:
Whitemans Bridge over Elk Creek on Elk Park Road is now well under construction. Construction crews should should be out of Elk Creek itself by the end of the month although bridge construction will go on for months. The new parking area that has been cleared will be tied up with the construction and equipment throughout the project and until completion, anglers are advised to avoid this area altogether. Again, a temporary inconvenience for a long term benefit. Once bridge construction is complete this area will provide significant public parking and much needed additional angling access along Elk Creek.

Pennsylvania Steelhead Association Meeting Reminder:
The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 12th at the American Legion on West 12th Street (Route 5 near the airport) at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome.
The club will be holding their annual Big Run Banquet on Saturday, September 29th. Tickets can be requested electronically by emailing psa@pasteelhead.org or you can get them at Poor Richards East or West stores, Folly's End Camp Grounds and Fish USA (ask for Brian). This is a huge event is a must attend event for the avid steelhead angler with great food, prizes, raffles, demonstrations and more.
