April 4th, 2007

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Temperatures hovering around 70 Tuesday afternoon were expecting to be a tease to the area with weather forecasts predicting a drop back down to the 30's with possible snow later in the week. Area tribs levels have been falling and again we are back to somewhat clear conditions with some flow. Suckers have been making their way into the tribs providing additional action to the remaining steelhead. Boaters have been hitting Presque Isle bay with reports of good bass and pan fishing. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 49 degrees, off Cleveland, 38 degrees, and off Erie, 37 degrees.

Additional Access Parking Along Elk Creek:
The North East side of the Steel bridge over Elk Creek on Elk Park Road in Lake City is now open to public parking for anglers. It is still very primitive and is a work in process but it's a start. Lake Erie Stamp money in cooperation with Girard Township are responsible for this the development of this newly acquired property.

Walnut Creek Access Area:
The Walnut Creek Basin and channel are currently going through the annual dredging process. The Access office is scheduled to open the weekend of April 13th on a weekend basis with full time hours beginning on May 5th. New slip holder docks are tentatively scheduled to go in the week of April 17th weather permitting. The Walnut creek access provides fishing licenses, ice, information, weather reports and most PFBC publications.

Approved Trout Water (Later Winter Stocked Lake) Closures:
Keep in mind that as of April 1st, both Lake Pleasant, the Fairview Gravel Pits, and the East and West Basin ponds (Waterworks ponds) are closed to fishing until 8:00 a.m. on April 14th, 2007, the opening of regular Trout season. These bodies of water are included as Approved Trout Waters, and are open to fishing, under the Late Winter Stocked Lake Program, through March 31

A Few Words of Advice for Opening Day:
Regular Trout season opens in Western PA on April 14th at 8:00 AM. Every area in the state has its "Hot Spots" and Northwest PA is no exception. Take the time to know the rules.
Anglers fishing the Fairview Gravel pit pond and Lake Pleasant are reminded that these areas are Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission controlled property. Open fires, and camping are prohibited, as is erecting any permanent structures. Pets are permitted on Commission Property but must be on a leash. Leaving ones vehicle unattended at the Gravel Pit pond on order to reserve a spot can be considered an abandoned motor vehicle and dealt with accordingly. Anglers fishing these congested areas on opening day are reminded that PFBC owned or controlled properties are specifically set aside for fishing and boating activities and are to be treated as family friendly areas.

Officers will be on the lookout for litter problems and open fires in these busy areas. All boats on the Gravel Pit Pond, as well as all PFBC owned or regulated waters, require PFBC or DCNR State Parks registration. Internal combustion engines are not permitted on Commission owned waters, although electric motors are permitted. Water temperatures will still be ice cold on opening day. Make sure your safety equipment is in order. A PFD is required for all persons on board on all boats. They must be U.S. Coast Guard approved, in good serviceable condition and be easily accessible to all occupants. Officers will be checking boats for safety equipment.
