West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Area tribs have been low and very clear with water temperatures still very warm for this time of year. Steelhead fishing remains good with fish spread throughout the west side tribs up to and in some areas beyond route 20. Anglers have been doing well in the lower stretches of the tribs at Elk and Walnut Creeks and along the lakeshore at day break at Trout Run. The Walnut Creek wall has been a busy spot on weekends with most fish being hooked at sunrise and at dusk. Early morning catches have been fair to good up and around the Legion Park area in Girard. A good number of boats were out this past week trolling for steelhead along the shoreline between Walnut Creek and Trout Run. Success rates were fair to good. Perch fishing has been fair to good and a few days of flat water on the lake have allowed boaters to enjoy an extended season of perching. There have been very few good reports of any remaining walleye. Lake Erie water temperatures as of this writing are 58 degrees off Toledo, 62 degrees off Cleveland and 61 degrees off Erie. As of Tuesday afternoon, area tribs were low and clear with some rain and possible light lake effect snow expected over the next week.

Support Your Local Sportsmen's Clubs: The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association welcomes Matt Yrczk to their October meeting. Matt will be discussing Shallow Steel Trolling. Also on the agenda is Brian McGrath, Millcreek Township Supervisor to discuss the final closing and planning on the recent land acquisition in Millcreek Township along Walnut Creek. This months meeting scheduled for Wednesday October 11th at 7:00 PM at the American Legion Post on Route 5 just East of Tom Ridge Field. The public is welcome. Outdoor sports writer Mike Bleech will be the guest speaker at the November 8th meeting.

Litter Problems:
The litter problems at the Walnut and Elk Creek Access have been heavy this year. As usual it is normally a small number of the thousands of anglers that contribute to this problem. Even with all the trash containers, sportsmen's club cleanups, and individual efforts, the litter problem seems to increase. Please take a moment to police your area before you leave. Make sure that coffee cup or soft drink bottle is not laying on the ground by your vehicle. Make yourself feel good by picking up a little trash on your way out. A very small effort by the majority can go a long way. As we all know, much of our tributary access is via private land and nothing will instigate land posting faster than a persistent litter problem. Officers will be on a vigilant lookout for those individuals that insist on spoiling our area by carelessly leaving any kind of trash behind.

A Few Tips for Night Fishing:
Night fishing along the Lake Shore or along the tribs in areas that permit night fishing, can be highly productive and a lot of fun. Here are a few suggestions:

1) A good lantern with a shield on the streamside will provide all the light
needed and minimize spooking the fish.

2) Scented baits are the ticket at night with low visibility. Try nightcrawlers, minnows, grubs, waxworms, skein, and of course chartreuse Powerbait.

3) Baits should be fished on the bottom.

4) Lighted floats to detect strikes can be helpful.

5) Heavier lines of up to 8 # test can be used at night.

6) Glow in the dark Cleos can be deadly when casting from shore into the lake.

7) Dress warm, pack a snack and hot drink and your favorite folding chair and be sure to clean up your area when
you leave.

8) DON'T FORGET TO TAKE THE KIDS!
