WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Very low and clear water conditions on all the tribs have continue to provide a real challenge to area anglers. Low water levels and cold temperatures just around the corner will be bringing unwanted ice shortly. Fish are holding in the pools along Walnut, the Manchester Hole and up to the bridge on Millfair road. Fish are scattered throughout Elk Creek up to the Legion Hole in Girard and small numbers can be found up to Folly's End. Water levels are low enough to allow casting from shore in most areas to avoid spooking fish. 4 lb., and as light as 2 lb. line along with hooks no larger than the 14 to 18 range have become typical tackle. Anglers were having good success on lower Elk Creek on Saturday with shiners and locally cured single eggs. The Walnut Creek Access basin is very low but has been producing some great fish for the patient anglers with success coming in time blocks. The basin opening has thinned the upstream crowds along the Walnut Creek Project waters and combined with hunting season and cold weather, a considerable amount of valuable elbow room may now be found especially during the week. We have had a number of calm lake days, allowing anglers good fishing opportunities along the lakeshore at Trout and Godfrey runs. Current Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is and average 48 degrees. The West County Tributaries were very low and clear as of Tuesday afternoon.

Law Enforcement from WCO Tom Edwards, Northwest Region Office:
For the period of November 12th through the 15th, area officer issued 23 citations and 52 warnings. These included 5 nursery water violations, 6 snagging violations, and 4 litter cases. In addition to the verbal warnings, there were 2 notice of violation issued for individuals not having licenses. Officers have issued over 200 citations and over 500 warnings for various violations during this year's steelhead season beginning in September.

Walnut Creek Access:
The Walnut Creek Access office and facilities begin winter hours in December and will be closing shortly thereafter for the winter months. Office hours will be 7:00 AM -5:30 PM on December 3rd and 4th, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM December 9th, 10th, and 11th, and 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM December 16th, 17th, and 18th. The office will then close for the winter and reopen in April 2006.

Winter Fishing Tip:
Allowing your reel to get wet in freezing weather can make the drag system
ineffective. Be sure to thoroughly dry out a wet reel and reoil lightly.... especially in
freezing conditions

Worth Mentioning Again:
With deer season next week wearing a little fluorescent orange in the more remote areas of the tribs may help to distinguish you from a hunter's prey.
Don't Eat Too Much:
Area Officers and local PFBC employees would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday, especially to those that are traveling, and the best of luck to area hunters for a safe and productive deer season.

Holiday Shopping:
With the official start of the Holiday shopping season this weekend, consider all that the PFBC has to offer to supplement your gift list. Fishing licenses make great gifts for the young angler who has turned 16 as will a lifetime license for the retired angler. Licenses can also be the incentive needed to get that spouse out on the water (If so desired). The PFBC also has an extensive list of publications and gift items available for purchase on line at our outdoor shop at http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/Fish_Boat/pfbchom2.html. Many of our publications, posters, and booklets are available at the Walnut Creek Access office as well.
