WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Perch fishing has slowed down with anglers having to work to attain their limits. Target areas are still North of Walnut and off the Point at Presque Isle. Anglers report marking fish but it seems that at times they just aren't hitting. Walleye fishing however, keeps improving with anglers doing very well in the first trench in 70' of water. Current Lake Erie average water temperature as of this writing is a relatively warm 70 degrees. Discover Presque Isle: After a long day of fishing for perch on the lake or chasing bass in the bay, or if the fish just plain aren't biting, an day at Discover Presque Isle can be an event to save the weekend. This annual three-day event to be held July 29th through the 31st, was designed to introduce visitors to Presque Isle State Park to the wide-variety of activities that can be enjoyed and more important to raise money for additional park improvements. Activities for this weekend event include kayak demonstrations, rock wall climbing, nature tours, kite flying, pontoon boat rides, volleyball tournaments, a duathlon (run, bike, run), a mile swim, evening bonfires on the beach, music, an arts and crafts show, a children's area and much more. A pancake breakfast will be held on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Other food vendors will be available as well. Go to www.presqueisle.org and click on "events" for more information. Proceeds benefit the Presque Isle Partnership and Presque Isle State Park. More than 90,000 people attended Discover Presque Isle 2004 raising $57,000 for new equipment on the peninsula. Law Enforcement: Recent details have revealed a significant number of boaters breaking no wake zones in and around Presque Isle Bay. Boaters and PWC operators are again advised that the area within 500' of Presque Isle along Presque Isle bay is a "slow no wake area". Other "slow no wake" problem areas have included Marina Bay, Misery bay, the Erie Channel and a number of areas along the south side of the bay. "Slow no wake" speed means simply that you should not be creating any wake behind your boat. Other violations included lack of or unserviceable safety equipment and improper or no PFDs on board. Area Wind and Wave Conditions: Area bait shops, the walnut creek access office, and countless other area agencies are bombarded every weekend with out of town phone calls regarding wind and wave conditions on the lake. Anglers traveling long distances to enjoy the area understandably are looking to assure that their vacation time wont be spoiled by strong winds and waves. Lake Erie is an area of rapid weather change with most of our weather heading from west to east and many of our area weather predictions coming from the Cleveland area. There are many sites on line that offer access to up to the minute radar loops that will often give good indications as to what to expect for the area. The wise traveler will not only make a call to the area to get current conditions, but will learn the area weather patterns and how they affect lake conditions. This doesn’t mean you have to be a meteorologist, but doing a little pre trip homework on the weather can mean the difference between a fun trip and a trip spoiled by weather.
