WESTERN ERIE COUNTY / DWCO RANDY LEIGHTON
Conditions:
Perch fishing is at its peak with many anglers limiting in less than an hour. Prime areas are still northwest of Walnut creek in 45-50' of water and off the Peninsula light house in 47' of water. Walleye action has been very good with some limits being observed. The best action has still been shallow. Good areas are west of Walnut in 47' of water and 65' of water from NNE out of Walnut to the point at Presque Isle or the '410 to '500 lines on the loran TD's. Smallmouth action has been fair to good near shore in 25-35' of water near the Ohio line.

Steelhead?
No, they are not here yet, however it's not to early to spend a rainy day checking your gear. Cleaning and lubricating those reels and re-spooling with fresh line will go a long way when the first opportunity arrives. An update of your fly box and jig collection can keep you busy as well. Now is a good time to check over the fly and noodle rods. Look for loose or bent eyes, especially at the rod tip. Be sure all hooks are sharp. Dull hooks are easily spit by a lively Steelhead. Waders should be checked for leaks and repaired, particular those that have been hanging in a hot garage or sitting in a trunk all summer like mine. It won't be but a few weeks before the dog days of summer will be giving way to the start of Steelhead season. The tribs are little more than a trickle at this time but with a little luck and a lot of rain it wont be long.

Celebrate Erie:
This weekend marks the annual "We Love Erie Days" celebration which has now been officially designated "Celebrate Erie". The high point of the weekend celebration is the Zambelli fireworks display launched over Presque Isle Bay. The fireworks have been moved to Saturday night, August 17th at 11:15 PM. The best seat in the house is by boat on Presque Isle Bay. Traditionally, good weather will bring hundreds of boats together in the Bay to view this spectacular event. The Coast Guard and the PFBC will be asking for your cooperation in minding established perimeter lines around Dobbins landing and the adjacent shorelines. No wake areas will in and around Presque Isle Bay will be strictly enforced. A reminder that boats at anchor are required to display a 360 degree all around light after sunset to identify their position. Please adhere to safety concerns when weighing anchor & returning to the dock after the fireworks end. Past year activities have gone so nicely a repeat performance would be great.

Walnut Marina Sunset Garden
The wall with pavers will be soon going up. Tuesday this week had the footer poured and we are ready to go with Phase I of the wall. If you are considering a paver purchase... act swiftly to get in on the first wall segment.

CENTRAL ERIE COUNTY/ WCO TOM EDWARDS
Perch:
Nice jumbos have been taken over the last couple of days directly out from the lighthouse and west of the condos.& limits are the norm coming in to East Ave. launch. Nothing in the form of walleye seen taken in those areas.

Walleye: This year remains to be slow, but a few are being taken due north and deep, (85-95 ft.)

Bass:
The tournaments have really slowed down so I can't give good info on smallies but I would assume that east of the peninsula toward the cribs would be the place to go.

Catfish:
Nice cats being taken from the South Pier in the late evening, they are hitting about anything that is being thrown at them.

West Nile Virus Info:
Pennsylvania Residents Should Report and Submit Dead Birds
1-877-PA-HEALTH

What is West Nile virus? West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne infection that can cause brain inflammation. The virus was previously only found in Africa, Eastern Europe and West Asia, but was detected in Pennsylvania for the first time in the year 2000. West Nile virus infection in people occurs primarily in the late summer or early fall. People can get infected from the bite of certain kinds of mosquitoes, such as the Northern house mosquito, that are infected with the virus. Mosquitoes get it when they bite or take a blood meal from birds infected with the West Nile virus. Those mosquitoes then transmit the virus to people, animals, and other birds when biting to take blood. You can reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and neighborhood by reducing the amount of standing water available for mosquito breeding. How You Can Help with Dead Bird Reporting. The West Nile virus infects certain wild birds. The infected birds, especially crows, are known to get sick and die from the infection. Reporting of dead birds is a good way to check for West Nile virus activity in the environment to allow implementation of prevention and control measures to minimize the spread of the virus. The Pennsylvania Dead Bird Surveillance program for West Nile virus relies on Commonwealth citizens to report and submit dead birds seen around their property or elsewhere to their local health department. Since the virus was detected in New York City in 1999, thousands of dead birds have been submitted for testing by citizens in the northeastern US.There is no evidence that handling dead birds can transmit West Nile virus. Pennsylvanian residents are strongly encouraged to report and submit dead birds. Residents should take the following steps when they see a dead bird:1. Call the 1-877-PA-HEALTH toll-free line for instructions on how to report or drop-off a dead bird.2. Avoid bare-hand contact when handling dead birds.3. & nbsp; Use rubber gloves when handling a dead bird. If you do not have gloves, insert your hand into a plastic bag, grasp the bird carefully and invert the bag over the bird. Each bird should be placed in tied plastic bag, and then placed inside a second tied bag. Double- bagging prevents cross-contamination of individual birds and leaking containers that may contaminate vehicles and handlers during transportation. If the bird is to be submitted for testing, take the bird to the nearest drop off site (see back page) as instructed.4. If you cannot drop off the birds, then refrigerate birds in an ice chest or refrigerator not used for food, or put ice packs on top of the bird and invert a pail over it, weighted down to avoid being dislodged, until the bird can be picked up.Residents may visit the West Nile web site (www.westnile.state.pa.us) for future updates or call the Department of Health toll-free telephone number at 1-877-PA-HEALTH (1-877-724-3258).

WESTERN CRAWFORD COUNTY / WCO JOE RUSSELL
Pymatuning Lake-
The walleye are hitting if you know how to get there attention. I checked several boats over the last couple of days and all had fish. The secret seems to be trolling Hot n Tots down deep, anywhere from 12 to 16 feet. The area straight across from the manning boat launch north of the causeway seems to be where all the action is. Bluegill and bass are still hitting and the water is still pretty warm, it was 84 as of Sunday the 11th. Jamestown/Turnersville ramp is closed now and is well under way with the much needed repairs and upgrades.

Conneaut Lake-
Bowfin have started picking up and are being caught more now. Bass and Blue gill are also being caught but not in great numbers. Just about anywhere on the lake is as good as any place else right now. The big thing right now is timing early or late before or after the boat traffic picks up.
