NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL TO OPEN AT MOHICAN ON APRIL 9

COLUMBUS, OH - A new 8.5-mile mountain bike trail that passes through Mohican State Park and State Forest in Ashland County is scheduled to open Saturday, April 9. Representatives from the Mohican/Malabar Bike Club and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will officially open the trail during an 11:30 a.m. ribbon cutting, and lead a bike ride immediately afterward.

The trail, which is open both to mountain bike riders and hikers, currently travels from the state park campground, off State Route 3, to County Road 939, near the state forest headquarters. It is the result of five years of planning for a recreational facility that will be harmonious with the ecosystem of the forest and park

The trail system, which crosses state forest and state park boundaries, is the result of recommendations from the Mohican Ad Hoc Council to allow low-impact recreation in the area.

The trail project is the result of a partnership between Ohio State Parks, the ODNR Division of Forestry and the Mohican Area Bike Club. Other participants are the Mohican Trails Partnership made up of local horsemen, hikers and mountain bikers and the Ohio Trails Partnership. Volunteers from the Ohio Trails Partnership assisted with the trail’s construction.

Representatives from 10 groups that make up the Ohio Mountain Bike Association will participate in the inaugural group ride. A potluck meal is planned for riders at the Mohican State Park campground shelter following the ride.
